MINDSET:
HOW SHOULD I BE
THINKING?
“For
as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his
heart is not with thee.” Proverbs 23:7
“For the rest, brethren, whatever is true,
whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome
and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything
worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your
minds on them].” Philippians 4:8 Amp
“Quitting is never an option on the road to success. Find the way
forward. If you have a positive mindset and are willing to persevere, there is
little that is beyond your reach. The attitude of being ready to work even in
the face of challenges and despite odds is what will make all the difference in
your life.” Roopleen
Until there’s a change
in the mindset of the individuals in a family, church, community, and nation,
nothing new can happen in such a place. The word mindset means your peculiar
way of thinking: fixed disposition and opinion which influences how you
interpret and respond to situations. It is a mental attitude which involves
your beliefs, values and feelings, it leads you to act or react in a particular
way. Your life will be greatly influenced (negatively or positively) by your
mindset: how you think and what you think about always. In Proverbs 23:7, the
Bible says, “For as he thinketh within himself, so is he…” (American Standard
Version).
According to Carol
Dweck, there are two (2) kinds of mindset: fixed mindset and growth mindset. A
“fixed mindset” is based on the assumption that the human character,
intelligence, and creative ability is fixed, static and cannot change. On the
other hand, a “growth mindset” is based on the belief that the human character,
intelligence, and creative ability can be developed through dedication to
learning, personal growth, resilience and diligence. Successful people have a
“growth mindset”- it is a transformational mindset.
You can change your
life by changing your mindset – how you think daily. A poor mind cannot produce
a rich life. You can’t desire to have a positive life and still be carrying
about a negative mindset. Debbie Millman once said, “if you imagine less, less
will be what you deserve.” You can change the direction of your life by
changing your thought patterns.
Your mindset and goals
must align. Your desired expectations and thoughts must agree for your dreams
to become a reality. You cannot be thinking small and hope to accomplish
something big. According to Wilfred Peterson. “Big thinking precedes great
achievement.”
You need a “growth
mindset” – a sound mind from where good thinking, quality choices and
innovative imaginations flows from. For you to step over and above your present
limitations in order to achieve your goals, you need to give attention to how
you think. Your thoughts carry real power just as much as your tongue does. The
words of Albert Einstein are worthy of note at this juncture. “The world we
have created is a product of our thinking; it cannot be changed without
changing our thinking”
In order to enjoy
uncommon success in life, you need to switch from a “fixed mindset” to a
“growth mindset.” One of the greatest limitations or obstacles on the path to
success is (not the devil, a witch, a generational curse or any of such things)
but a “fixed mindset” – a poor state of mind with unhealthy thought patterns,
disempowering traditional beliefs and wrong religious assumptions. How you
think and what you think about decide most of your life’s experiences.
